Overview

Vision Zero is a multi-national strategy aimed at eliminating all traffic fatalities and severe injuries while promoting safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for everyone. It was first implemented in Sweden in the 1990s and has since been adopted by cities around the world.

The Town of Carrboro boasts a longstanding commitment to fostering a safe environment for pedestrian, bicyclists, and motorists that align with the core principles of Vision Zero. Some of the Town's more recent achievements, include:

  • Adopting a resolution to advance a Vision Zero initiative;
  • Amending the Land Use Ordinance to include a Complete Streets policy with Vision Zero language;
  • Participating in the annual NC Vision Zero Leadership Training Institute;
  • Deploying a series of roadway changes to enhance pedestrian and bicyclist safety, including residential traffic calming measures; and
  • Incorporating a Vision Zero needs assessment into local and regional transportation planning efforts.

Regional Vision Zero Action Plan

The Triangle West Transportation Planning Organization (TWTPO), formerly the DCHCMPO, has completed a regional Vision Zero Action Plan to improve transit, pedestrian/bicyclist and highway safety in the planning area. It identifies areas of high injury throughout the region and offers a variety of strategies to mitigate concerns. Carrboro Town Council adopted the plan on April 1, 2025.
